In order to work at most correctional facilities one must be at least 18 or 21 years old; not a convicted felon; have a high school diploma or GED; have U.S. citizenship; and have held a job for two years prior. Job Description

Corrections officers will work in an adult male or female facility with some facilities having special needs offenders. He/she is responsible for upholding orders and supervising offenders in a safe correctional environment. corrections officers will advise and instruct offenders in their adjustment to institutional living. Correction officers (also known as detention officers, jailers, prison guards) are responsible for supervising inmates, enforcing rules and maintaining security  within the walls of a correctional facility. Requirements to become a county corrections officer in Utah vary from agency to agency, but often include predetermined amounts of training and work experience.

Job Description:

Correctional officers in Utah have the duty of maintaining order in a county operated detention facility. They watch over inmates and make sure that all rules and regulations are met while those incarcerated serve their sentences.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Here’s some general requirements that you must meet before you are offered the position of a detention officer (also known as prison guard, CO and/or jailer)  in the state of Utah:

• Must be at least 18 years old and must have a High School diploma or  G.E.D

• Must have a Utah driver’s license with good driving history.

• Must be in good shape. Overweight and out of shape applicants are often not hired as correctional officers. That’s why it is so important to follow a Fast Weight Loss Program if you are a little bit overweight.

• Must pass the polygraph test. According to professional polygraph examiner A.J. Phillips, author of How To Pass Your Polygraph Test 50% of first time test takers fail their polygraph examination even if they are telling the truth. A.J. explains in his polygraph prep book how to pass your polygraph test your first time through.

• Must pass the oral board interview. I recommend reading interview expert, Robert Lawrence’s new ebook, Killer Interview Secrets. In it, Robert gives advice on how to beat out the competition, even though they may be more qualified than you (using these techniques shows the “intangibles” you offer the agency that no one else can!)

• Must not have any felony convictions or any criminal cases pending.

• Must not have any convictions involving cultivating, transporting, or distributing illegal drugs of any kind.

Salary Outlook:

Annual salaries of correction officer will continue to rise as a direct result of the over crowded issues in many jails and prisons nationwide. It’s also good to know that Federal correctional officer get paid a lot more than state, and county detention officers.

Whether you want to become a correctional officer for the state and/or the county the hiring process isn’t going to be easy for neither agency. In fact, if you are overweight, and out of shape you might as well forget it. You won’t stand a chance among a large pool of applicants who are physical fit.  In this article, I’m going to share some tips that will help you become a more hire-able applicant.

Introduction:

Correction officers (also known as detention officers, jailers, deputy sheriff) are responsible for supervising prisoners, enforcing rules and maintaining security  within the walls of a correctional facility. Requirements to become a county corrections officer in New York (NYC) vary from agency to agency, but often include predetermined amounts of training and work experience.

If you live in the state of Michigan, and you’re interested in becoming a correctional officer in MI your timing couldn’t be better. You see, correction officers are in high demand nationwide. This is especially true for state, county, and federal level facilities where the turn over rate among prison guards/jailers/ detention officers are very high.

Some first year officers find being a correctional  officer fun and challenging, while others find it stressful,  and as a result they quit within the first year of employment.

Here are just some general requirements and qualifications needed to become a correctional officer in the state of Michigan:

• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have earned a High School Diploma or G.E.D.

• You must have an educational background that includes at least 15 semester (or 23 term) college credit hours in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Educational Psychology, Family Relations, Guidance and Counseling, Pastoral Counseling, Social Work or Law Enforcement;

• OR possession of 30 semester (or 45 term) college credits in any academic or degree prerequisite area;

• OR any bachelor’s degree (two years of satisfactory Corrections Officer employment at the state or federal level will fulfill the educational requirement).
• These credits must be earned prior to submitting an application.
