Correctional officers work in a variety of settings, from large prisons to small community police stations, residential treatment centers to work camps. Their job is largely determined by the needs of their employment location; however, it usually involves maintaining a safe environment for the inmates under their charge.

Correctional officers work to minimize fights and other disturbances by visiting prison or jail cells, taking preemptive measures to diffuse emotionally charged situations, and building appropriate relationships. Becoming a correctional officer is not for the faint of heart. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics states that the rate of non-fatal injuries reported by correctional training officers is among the highest.

Jailer, Prison Guard or Detention Officer Job Description

In addition to working directly with inmates, correctional training officers support numerous administrative functions. They organize paperwork for transferring inmates, ensuring that all the permits are signed and filed, and often search mail for contraband.

Some correctional training officers supervise inmates while eating or recreating, and all must stay up-to-date with licensing requirements and site-specific knowledge such as equipment use. The following article will provide you with information and resources on how to become a correctional officer, what to expect from the training period, and what the day-to-day of the job entails.

Correctional Training Officer Facts and Statistics

Becoming a correctional officer requires a high school diploma, at minimum. Many states have more stringent academic requirements. (Correctional Training Officer Facts)

Some correctional officers make lateral moves to related fields of employment. For example, work experience can lead to career opportunities in drug counseling, or as a parole or probation officer. (Career Overview)

Correctional training officers can expect a high degree of job security, as the inmate population continues to grow and qualified officers are in high demand. (All Things Political)

Students who pursue a four-year degree in criminal justice, a common degree for individuals wanting to become correctional officers, take classes in law, crime prevention, communication, and social science. (Michigan State University)

Correctional officers can work with young adults in group homes, detention centers, and work camps. For these jobs, interpersonal skills are extremely important. (Juvenile Corrections Officer)

There are nearly half a million positions for correctional training officers. Over half of the jobs are in state prisons, and almost all the rest are in local jails. A small number of positions, about 32,000 in 2002, are in federal or privately owned prisons. (Correctional Officer Statistics)

Correctional officers have an extremely high stress job. Their suicide rate is 39% higher than other occupations, and their divorce and substance abuse rate is higher than the general population as well. A correctional training officer can expect to be assaulted twice, at least, in a twenty year career. (Department of Corrections Facts)

The median salary for a correctional officer is $39, 608. (Salary)

Criminal justice degrees, including associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees, can be earned online through numerous accredited programs. (Directory of Schools)

Educational Requirements of Correctional Training Officers

According the United Sates Bureau of Labor Statistics , the Federal Bureau of Prisons requires that all correctional officers have at least a bachelor’s degree, if not more. Many places of employment also require three years of full-time experience in counseling, assistance, or supervision (or a combination of these fields). State and local corrections agencies may be more lax on their requirements, and a high school diploma and/or some college credit may suffice over a college degree.

Beyond a formal education, Federal, state, and local departments often provide training for correctional officers based on a set list of guidelines. After this instruction, most correctional agencies offer on-the-job training to all of their new employees. This training might consist of information on legal restrictions and interpersonal relations. Individuals will also be taught in firearm proficiency and self-defense skills.

Some classes you may expect to take in a correctional officer training academy include institutional policies, regulations, operations, and custody and security procedure.

Federal correctional officers must also undergo 200 hours of formal training with the first year of employment. In addition, 120 hours of specialized training is required at the U.S. Bureau of Prisons residential training center in Georgia.

Those individuals working as members of the prison tactical response teams are trained to respond to disturbances, riots, hostage situations, forced cell moves, and other dangerous confrontations. They learn how to disarm those wielding weapons, how to protect themselves from inmates with chemical agents, and other harsh tactics (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Keep in mind: becoming a correctional officer puts you on the frontlines of dangerous situations on a regular basis. The training for this career reflects that.

Average Salary and Job Outlook of a Correctional Officer

The employment of correctional training officers is expected to grow by 9 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is about as fast as average for all jobs currently in the United States. Employment should increase with the general growth of the population overall, as more and more people will need to be incarcerated.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also predicts that a large percentage of those currently working as correctional training officers will retire in the coming years and need to be replaced. This makes the outlook for this job incredibly favorable.

The median annual wage of a correctional officer or jailer was $38,380 in May of 2008. The middle 50 percent earn between $29,660 and $51,000, and the top ten percent earn more than $64,110. Related occupations fall as follows:

First-Line Supervisors/Managers of Correction Officers = Median salary of $57,380 in May 2008

Bailiffs = Median salary of $37,820 in May 2008

Federal Correctional Officers = Median salary of $53,459

Individuals pursuing this career, however, must have a bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or a related field. Job outlook for this profession looks excellent.

Security Guards and Gaming Surveillance Officers: This job is a great opportunity for anybody who enjoys correctional employment. The job can be hazardous, but due to flexible hours and limited formal training requirements, competition is tough.

In order to work at most correctional facilities one must be at least 18 or 21 years old; not a convicted felon; have a high school diploma or GED; have U.S. citizenship; and have held a job for two years prior. A college degree or post secondary education will give applicants an edge with regards to promotions.

Prospects for correctional officers’ positions must meet minimum requirements of eyesight, hearing, and physical abilities. They must also be able to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making abilities. Drug tests, background checks, and written tests are also part of the application process. Quite a few institutions determine a candidate’s aptness to succeed in correctional facility employment by using standardized tests.

The American Jail Association and American Correctional Association have established standards for training correctional officers that many local, State, and Federal institutions use in their training. Local agencies in some States rely on State-sponsored academies for training.

Instruction continues on-the-job after formal training, especially with regards to legal regulations related to an officer’s work and effective communication skills. Self-defense training and firearm certification is required by some institutes. Though training and application requirements differ between facilities, most trainees receive weeks or months of on-the-job training after being hired.

In formal training at academies, new officers learn about several pertinent topics, including custodial practices and security procedures, facility regulations, and prison operations. New Federal officers, in order to maintain their employment, are required to receive 200 hours of official training within one year of being hired.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons administers an additional 120 hours of training during the trainees first 60 days of employment at their residential training center in Glynco, Georgia. In-service trainings help veteran officers maintain awareness of advances and new practices. Prison tactical response teams are composed of correctional officers who have received training about chemicals, emergency management techniques, forced entry procedures, and weapons. These teams respond to prison uprisings, conflicts, forced cell moves, hostage situations, and other hazardous disturbances.

Correctional sergeants are chosen from among qualified officers that have a combination of training, education, and experience. Sergeants fill a supervisory role as they ensure safety and manage actions of officers in specific areas during their shift. Additional supervisory and administrative jobs, including all the way up to warden, are filled by qualified and dedicated correctional officers. Lateral job movement occurs as correctional officers transfer to similar fields of employment like parole officer, probation officer, or correctional treatment specialist.

Detention Officer Job Openings & Employment Opportunity

Superb job opportunities await correctional officers. Thousands of jobs will be created each year as existing officers leave the field by retiring or transferring and as employment demand increases. The comparatively low salaried and rural location has made finding and keeping qualified officers difficult for State and local facilities. These conditions will likely continue in the future.

The growing prison population will create new supervisory positions and correctional officer posts, resulting in a faster-than-average employment growth rate through 2012 for correctional officers. Inmate populations will likely increase as an effect of mandatory sentencing laws resulting in reduced parole and longer sentences. New facility construction will create more job opportunities as well, though the rate at which new institutions are built may be slowed somewhat by State and local budgetary constraints. Private institutions hired by the government to provide correctional services will also be a source of corrections employment.

Correctional officers can join unions or other negotiating groups but are not permitted to strike. However, the rising inmate population allows for few officers being fired or laid off.

Correctional Deputy Earnings, Wages and Salaries

The top 10 percent of correctional officers and jailers earned $52,370 in 2002, compared to the less than $22,010 that the lowest 10 percent earned. The median annual earnings were $32,670 with the middle half earning between $25,950 and $42,620. Veteran officers may earn more still.

Utah Correctional Officer Job Description & Requirements

Correction officers (also known as detention officers, jailers, prison guards) are responsible for supervising inmates, enforcing rules and maintaining security within the walls of a correctional facility. Requirements to become a county corrections officer in Utah vary from agency to agency, but often include predetermined amounts of training and work experience.

Job Description:

Correctional officers in Utah have the duty of maintaining order in a county operated detention facility. They watch over inmates and make sure that all rules and regulations are met while those incarcerated serve their sentences.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Here’s some general requirements that you must meet before you are offered the position of a detention officer (also known as prison guard, CO and/or jailer) in the state of Utah:

Must be at least 18 years old and must have a High School diploma or G.E.D

Must have a Utah driver’s license with good driving history.

Must be in good shape. Overweight and out of shape applicants are often not hired as correctional officers. That’s why it is so important to follow a Fast Weight Loss Program if you are a little bit overweight.

Must pass the polygraph test. According to professional polygraph examiner A.J. Phillips, author of How To Pass Your Polygraph Test 50% of first time test takers fail their polygraph examination even if they are telling the truth. A.J. explains in his polygraph prep book how to pass your polygraph test your first time through.

Must pass the oral board interview. I recommend reading interview expert, Robert Lawrence’s new ebook, Killer Interview Secrets. In it, Robert gives advice on how to beat out the competition, even though they may be more qualified than you (using these techniques shows the “intangibles” you offer the agency that no one else can!)

Must not have any felony convictions or any criminal cases pending.

Must not have any convictions involving cultivating, transporting, or distributing illegal drugs of any kind.

Salary Outlook:

Annual salaries of correction officer will continue to rise as a direct result of the over crowded issues in many jails and prisons nationwide. It’s also good to know that Federal correctional officer get paid a lot more than state, and county detention officers.

Here’s the directory for all the county jails in the state of Utah and their respective contact information. Feel free to contact the facility directly for more information on the jailer hiring process:

Federal Detention Officer Job Descriptions & Requirements

Although being a federal correctional officer pays a lot more than state and county COs, the selection process is a lot more stringent. The competition is even greater if you want to work in a government operated correctional facility.

According to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average U.S. federal corrections officer receives a salary of over $53,000, significantly higher than those employed by state and local government. It offers a well-paid career, with opportunities for advancement, but the job comes with weighty responsibilities and demands that require mental and physical strength.

Basic Job Description

A federal corrections officer supervises inmates held by the federal government in a jail following arrest and before a trial, or in a prison or detention facility following a conviction. Officers oversee the daily running of the center, keeping it secure, preventing and dealing with disturbances, monitoring activity, enforcing rules and protecting the well-being of both inmates and staff.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Here’s some general requirements that you must meet before you are offered the position of a detention officer for the federal government:

You must have a 4 year bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

You must be in good shape in order to pass the physical fitness test. Overweight and out of shape applicants are often not hired as correctional officers. That’s why it is so important to follow a proven weight loss program immediately after deciding that you want to go into corrections.

You must pass the polygraph test. According to professional polygraph examiner A.J. Phillips, author of How To Pass Your Polygraph Test 50% of first time test takers fail their polygraph examination even if they are telling the truth. A.J. explains in his polygraph prep book how to pass your polygraph test your first time through.

You must pass the oral board interview. I recommend reading interview expert, Robert Lawrence’s new ebook, Killer Interview Secrets. In it, Robert gives advice on how to beat out the competition, even though they may be more qualified than you (using these techniques shows the “intangibles” you offer the agency that no one else can!)

Requirements To Be a Correctional Officer In New York

Whether you want to become a correctional officer for the state and/or the county the hiring process isn’t going to be easy for neither agency. In fact, if you are overweight, and out of shape you might as well forget it. You won’t stand a chance among a large pool of applicants who are physical fit. In this article, I’m going to share some tips that will help you become a more hire-able applicant.

Introduction:

Correction officers (also known as detention officers, jailers, deputy sheriff) are responsible for supervising prisoners, enforcing rules and maintaining security within the walls of a correctional facility. Requirements to become a county corrections officer in New York (NYC) vary from agency to agency, but often include predetermined amounts of training and work experience.

Job Description:

Correctional officers in New York have the duty of maintaining order in a county operated detention facility. They watch over inmates and make sure that all rules and regulations are met while those incarcerated serve their sentences.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Here’s some general requirements that you must meet before you are offered the position of a detention officer (also known as deputy sheriff) in the state of New York (NYC):

Must have a High School diploma or G.E.D

Must have a New York State driver’s license with good driving history.

Must be in good shape in order to pass the physical fitness test. Overweight and out of shape applicants are often not hired as correctional officers. That’s why it is so important to follow a Law Enforcement Specific Workout Program immediately after deciding that you want to go into corrections.

The major qualification to becoming a correctional officer (also known as detention officer, jailer, sheriff’s deputy or prison guard) in the state of Michigan is obtaining a high-school diploma, although some college credits are preferred for some positions.

Job Description:

Correctional officers in Michigan have the responsibility of maintaining order in a detainment facility. They watch over inmates and make sure that all rules and regulations are met while those incarcerated serve their sentences.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Here’s some general requirements that you must meet before you are offered the position of a detention officer (also known as deputy sheriff) in the state of Michigan:

Must have a High School diploma or G.E.D

Must have a Michigan driver’s license. If you are a licensed driver in another state you must go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and switch it over

Must be in good shape in order to pass the physical fitness test. Overweight and out of shape applicants are often not hired as correctional officers. That’s why it is so important to follow a Law Enforcement Specific Workout Program immediately after deciding that you want to go into corrections.

Must have a High School diploma or G.E.D

Must have a Florida driver’s license.
